My game of the year?

Space Marine 2.

Why? Simple. It's the only game I paid full price for and managed to finish this year! It took me eight weeks to complete the full campaign!

It's an accomplishment I’m rather proud of, considering how little time I have for gaming these days.

When I do play, I have an unfortunate tendency to get distracted. I’ll be midway through one game, only to get pulled into something new, leaving the first game abandoned.

Case in point: I was deep into Diablo 4 before Dragon Age: Veilguard stole my attention. And that’s a recurring theme.

But Space Marine 2? That was different. Sure, it might not make most critics’ “Game of the Year” lists, but it was exactly what I needed. A shamelessly military romp, set in a grim dark universe 40,000 years into the future; it was unapologetically fun.

And here’s the thing: playing Space Marine 2 sparked a deeper dive into the lore. I started reading books, watching videos, and immersing myself in the expansive and wonderfully grim world of Warhammer 40K.

For me, a great game isn’t just about mechanics or graphics, it’s about the experience. And this year, Space Marine 2 delivered that in spades.

So here’s to full-price purchases, completed campaigns, and discovering new obsessions in the grim darkness of the far future.

What’s your game of the year? And more importantly, did you actually finish it?
