Atwood wrote the entire novel on a typewriter while living in West Berlin in 1984 and she famously said that 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.
Every law, every punishment, every act of control had already 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.
