What kind of preparation goes into creating realistic crime scenes in VFX?
Here's Ana-Luiza Rodrigues to share more about her fascinating journey.
Ana-Luiza spoke about her work on a Netflix crime show, specifically the challenges of creating realistic gunfire scenes. She highlighted the importance of research and preparation in VFX, especially when dealing with episodic, seasonal shows.
For the show, Ana-Luiza created a detailed spreadsheet cataloging all the guns used. This included the types of muzzle flashes that matched each gun. However, she discovered that some of the pre-existing muzzle flashes didn’t look quite right, leading to adjustments and creative decisions.
Ana-Luiza emphasized the value of reference material, particularly from YouTube, where gun enthusiasts post detailed videos. These videos allowed her to analyze the smoke, brightness of the muzzle flash, and the bullet's trajectory frame by frame.
In collaboration with her coordinator, they determined the hero shots for different guns. Each team member then replicated these hero shots for consistency. The goal was to match the muzzle flashes with the real guns used while ensuring everything looked cool on screen.
Ana-Luiza also used ActionVFX muzzle fire elements to enhance the realism and consistency of the shots.
One of the technical challenges was working with HDR and ACES, which made the process a bit heavier and trickier. Despite this, Ana-Luiza and her team managed to balance the technical requirements with the visual aesthetics.
Ana-Luiza also had to familiarize herself with gun names and details she hadn't known before. Her spreadsheet became an essential tool, guiding her through the intricate process of matching the correct muzzle flash to each gun.
Her experience underscores the research and preparation needed in VFX. It’s not just about what looks cool but ensuring accuracy and consistency to enhance the storytelling. Ana-Luiza’s dedication to learning and adapting to new challenges is inspiring and something students should strife for.
