Every copywriting course I’ve ever read says the same thing:
no one cares about our past.
They only care about what we can do for them right now.
No one cares that I studied Multimedia Technology at Singapore Polytechnic for three years.
No one cares that I was inspired by The Fellowship of the Ring and watched it 17 times in the cinema.
No one cares that I spent three years in the Singapore Military.
No one cares that I taught recruiters, soldiers, cadets, and officers how to operate and troubleshoot signal equipment.
No one cares that I served in the Singapore Air Force as a reservist.
No one cares that I ran my own design business, StudioDeGanz for ten years.
No one cares that I taught 6-12 year olds Cinema 4D.
No one cares that I taught Maya at Singapore Polytechnic.
No one cares that I moved to Vancouver, hoping to work on the next Battlestar Galactica or The X-Files.
No one cares that I ended up teaching the very VFX program I took.
No one cares that I spent 14 years at my former school, helping it become one of the top VFX schools in the world.
No one cares that I created the first full-time compositing program in North America.
No one cares that I taught myself Katana and helped create the World’s first Lighting TD program.
No one cares that I’ve taught over 200 students VFX and compositing, many of whom have worked on nearly every blockbuster film and TV show in the last decade.
No one cares that I left and founded Alpha Chromatica with my former students.
No one cares that I created a fully remote compositing program and have already graduated 5 students.
But here’s the thing that these copywriting courses often miss:
People do care about our personal history.
Because our history shows what we stand for, what we won’t compromise on, and most importantly, what we’re striving for.
And I’m striving for one thing: helping my students get jobs as Compositors in the VFX industry by teaching them the art and science of compositing for feature films and TV shows.
"That’s what drives me. It’s the foundation of everything I teach, and it’s why I’ve chosen to build something independent - free from corporate interests - where passion and artistry come first.
Because in the end, it’s our past that shapes the future we’re building.
