In Which the Author is Learning Gaea - Part 1

Put away your pitchforks! I know there are plenty of 3D programs, including SideFX Houdini, that can do this, but I've been intrigued by Gaea for a long time now.

I reached out to QuadSpinner, and their representative, Cynthia, recommended a perpetual Gaea 1.0 license. It has no commercial usage restrictions and isn't limited to 2 years. Imagine that - actually owning a piece of software!

Plus, if you get Gaea 1.0, you'll be able to upgrade to Gaea 2.0 when it releases.

I've created mountains in 3ds Max and Cinema 4D before, but this is my first attempt with Gaea. I’m still learning the ropes and haven’t delved into the shading or lighting network yet.

Despite having the moniker of being a comp guy, most people don’t realize I do have an extensive background in 3D. In fact, my friends back home only knew me as a 3D (rotating sofa) guy. So, it’s nice to finally find some time to go back to my roots.

My goal here is to create a snowy terrain for a spaceship to traverse close to the surface, perhaps even displacing the snow (FX simulation in Houdini) as it speeds by.

This Gaea experiment is just another step in crafting more complex and realistic environments for Alpha Chromatica Education (ACE) students to work with.

Anyone used Gaea? Any tips for a noob?

Also stay tuned for more updates on this project!
