Continuing our journey through the interview conducted by Q Park, who has since become a talented compositor with credits on this year's summer blockbusters, Deadpool and Wolverine, I’m excited to share another valuable excerpt.
In this segment, we delved into a topic that’s fundamental to mastering visual effects: understanding the six realities. When I first started this program, I introduced these six realities to my students as a core concept. These aren’t just abstract ideas; they’re essential lenses through which we view and create photorealistic images.
We discussed everything from the physical reality, which governs the real world, to the photographic reality, where the camera’s perspective transforms how we see that world. We also touched on perceptual reality, which is how our eyes interpret light and color in a nonlinear way, and imagined reality, which often strips away details in our dreams and can be a hindrance in VFX work.
Then there’s the expected reality, the mental image we hold of how something should look, and the approximate reality, which acknowledges that all software tools, no matter how advanced, are approximations of the real thing. It’s these realities that blend together in every shot we create, and being aware of them is what separates mediocre work from truly exceptional visual effects.
This discussion is a reminder of how intricate and demanding visual effects can be. Simply knowing how to use software like Nuke isn’t enough. You need to understand these six realities to truly excel in this field.
It’s this depth of knowledge that I strive to impart to my students at Alpha Chromatica Education (ACE).

P.S. Which of the six realities do you think plays the most critical role in achieving photorealism?
