In Which the Author Was Once Interviewed by Q Park - Part 8

In this segment of my interview with Q Park - now a talented compositor credited on this year’s summer blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine - we explored what makes some visual effects unforgettable and why artistry sometimes outweighs realism.

Q asked me to name a visual effects sequence that left a lasting impression.

For me, it was that stunning multiverse scene from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Strange and America Chavez tumble through a series of wildly different universes each appearing for only a few seconds but crafted with incredible attention to detail.

One moment they’re in a cartoon-like world, the next in an abstract dimension.

What really impressed me was how their momentum carried through each transition, making the sequence feel seamless and exhilarating.

Q summed it up perfectly: “It isn’t just about making real things. It’s about making the unreal real.”

That’s where VFX artists become true creatives.

Sure, technical precision is crucial, but sequences like this allow artists to tap into their imagination.

As Q mentioned, environments and set extensions are powerful storytelling tools, they set the tone and pull audiences deeper into the narrative.

It’s not always about strict realism, but about creating a world that feels authentic to the story.

Some films, like Dune, demand realism to immerse viewers in the intricate world of Arrakis.

But other movies, like Doctor Strange, take a different path. The audience matters too.

Some people want deep sci-fi immersion, while others just want to kick back with popcorn and enjoy the ride.

That’s the balance.

VFX isn’t always about chasing perfection. You could create the most realistic Hulk, but if it doesn’t make the film fun, it won’t matter.

The key is knowing when to let go and embrace the experience.
