Ghostbusters is amongst my top 5 movies of all time. I have lost count of how many times I have watched the original Ghostbusters and its sequel on reruns on Singapore television. I remember quite fondly the first time I watched it. It freaking blew my mind. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man sequence is one of my favorite scenes. The banter on the rooftop with Ray saying, "I couldn't help it. It just popped in there," is a line I still remember to this day.
This was in the early '90s, and I had no idea what special effects or visual effects meant. Movies to me were a gateway to a world that was beyond my comprehension, and I often found myself lost in these worlds that these movies existed in.
Being in Singapore, without the internet, I had no idea what New York City was, where it was, and why everyone there looked different and why there were ghosts roaming the streets, and why every major disaster took place in that one city.
All I cared about was the Ecto-1 and the proton packs. And the iconic sounds they made. My appreciation of the Writing and Comedy grew later and over the years.
While there have been a few attempts to reclaim the magic, I think Ghostbusters is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of movie. I am just glad they made it, and I got to watch it to my heart's content as a Kid. It's one of those memories that is so innocent and pure. A times when there was no phone, no reviews, no random people muddling your experience. You just sat there transfixed and enjoyed the hell out of it!
While my biased opinion of Ghostbusters never being surpassed will remain steadfast, I am excited to see what new adventures these new generation of Ghostbusters will undertake.
With that, I wanted to share the new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. I have quite a number of former students at Sony Pictures Imageworks who have contributed their artistry to this movie, and I am so proud of them for working on something Ethereal. You guys all made fun of and/or complained about the ethereal project while you were at school, and now you got to work on what is perhaps the biggest Ethereal project in the World! It doesn't get any bigger than this!
