Client work pays the bills. Nobody argues with that.

But most artists carry something else alongside it, a project they keep meaning to start, a direction they keep postponing until the pipeline clears, a version of their work that exists only in their head because there's always something more urgent on the desk.

What I've noticed is that the artists who seem most alive in their craft have something personal running in the background, even if it's small. Not a second career. Just something that belongs entirely to them.

When that thing is genuinely aligned with what excites them, it doesn't drain what's left after the paid work. It actually restores it.

Finding that thing and protecting even a small amount of time for it, changes how you show up for everything else.
