The path into VFX was never designed with you specifically in mind.
The traditional routes, the right school, the right reel format, the right studio progression were built around averages. They work for some people and miss others entirely. And for the artists who don't fit neatly into that template, the industry can feel like a series of closed doors rather than a navigable landscape.
What I've watched is that the artists who build the most distinctive careers are rarely the ones who followed the prescribed route most faithfully. They're the ones who stayed curious about what was available beyond the obvious path. Who treated a closed door as information about direction rather than evidence of failure.
You are not here to replicate someone else's career. The version of this industry that has room for you may not be the version you were pointed toward at the beginning. Finding it requires being willing to look somewhere other than where everyone else is looking.
That's not a consolation for not fitting in. It's a more accurate description of how lasting careers in this industry actually get built.
